We are always hearing about how good and important a detox is for your overall health. I did a detox last January to reset my body and help rid it of the effects of unnecessary evils I had put in my mouth over the holidays. I recently decided to do another detox, in the form of a sugar fast I am currently participating in with Revelation Wellness.
The dietary kind of detox is the purposeful act of temporarily removing from your diet the harmful things you have been exposing your body to for some time. It gives you a chance to truly be thoughtful about everything you put into your body. Whether a detox is for physical, emotional or spiritual reasons, it allows your body to use its God-designed self-cleansing and healing processes to become healthier and restore balance from within. Here are 7 reasons why detoxing is important for your body.
I Wish I Knew Then What I Know Now
I am not a doctor or a health guru, but God has been teaching me some interesting things about the importance of health and why it is important to take care of our bodies. As a mom, I would have done things differently if I knew then what I know now. My daughter had autoimmune issues at a very young age. Looking back, I can relate many of her issues to the fact she was constantly on antibiotics. She was on them for so long she is allergic to most antibiotics today.
I’m not saying all antibiotics are bad, because they aren’t. I did what I thought was right at the time, because no one wants to have a sick child. But I would have tried alternatives such as essential oils and homeopathic remedies rather than jumping into an antibiotic every time.
Antibiotics are viewed very differently today than when my daughter was a baby thirty-three years ago. We have more choices because we are better educated about how the body works and the importance of allowing our bodies to heal themselves naturally.
Nourish the Soul
God created our bodies with incredible natural healing abilities. However, we are also responsible for taking care of ourselves. This means doing our best to nourish our mind, body and soul. We were created as triune beings and if one area is out of line, chances are we are all out of line. We can’t keep consuming junk in any area and expect to remain healthy.
Anything in excess can make us sick, whether it is sugar, social media, the news or even exercise. There is a balance to everything in life. This is why a detox is good. Sometimes we need a reset in our body, mind and soul to purge ourselves from the thing or things that are causing us to not feel well and affecting us physically, spiritually or emotionally.
In my case, I know over the past few months I have ingested much more sugar than normal. Summertime, along with birthday and anniversary celebrations, led up to one big eating frenzy of sugar and other carbohydrates. I have been feeling lethargic, foggy and experiencing joint pain. It wasn’t a coincidence, but a God incidence, that the Revelation Wellness Sugar Fast invitation ended up in my e-mail.
I loved the results from my first detox in January and I knew it was time for another. I have embraced this sugar fast because I’m tired of the temporary high sugar gives me. Sure, it tastes good, but the long-term effects on my body and mind are not worth the cost. The satisfaction doesn’t last and you are always left wanting more.
Sugar is a Drug
We talk about the opioid problem in our nation, and it is tragic, but the fact is we have an even more pervasive problem in America and it is the sugar problem. Sugar can kill you too, it just may take longer and it is viewed as an acceptable drug. Sugar is addictive, and while I may have never taken illegal drugs, there are definite withdrawal symptoms from sugar. The first few days of my sugar fast I had a massive headache and was incredibly tired.
Currently, I am on day 16 of my Revelation Wellness sugar fast. I have loved doing this fast because of the additional factors they have added in for physical activity and spiritual impact, to help me understand my body and the importance of feeding myself “soul” food.
Each of us knows the thing in our life we need to detox from. Mine happens to be sugar. I can promise if you are faithful to follow through, God will be with you in the journey. It has been a life changing experience for me.
Breakthrough is coming and I will share more about that next week as I continue to unravel what God is teaching me during this time with Him.
Here are seven reasons why detoxing your body is important to your physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
Removes the Junk and Stinking Thinking!
We have all heard the saying, “You Are What You Eat.” If I continually ingest junk instead of good food, I am not giving my body the proper nutrition and I am depleting myself of the vitamins and other nutrients I need in order to maintain a healthy system. A detox not only removes the unhealthy elements from your body, it actually makes you crave the good stuff. My sugar fast doesn’t make me crave sugar, it makes me crave vegetables and other food that will actually nourish my body. Spiritually, my purposeful quiet time with God makes me crave more of Him and His sweetness towards me. (Yes, pun intended!)
It is easy to be influenced by what is going on around us, whether it is through social media, news, television or even the lives of our friends and family. We need to be careful of what we take in with our minds because it can be detrimental and become toxic in our thoughts and our relationship with God.
Investing time in your relationship with God allows His thoughts to become your thoughts and helps create a barrier to stinking thinking!
Creates Healthy Habits
A detox creates healthy habits. How does it do that? It creates a different routine and makes the mind think differently than the rut it was in prior to the detox. My personal example is, at night while watching television I thought I needed a sugary snack of some type as reward at the end of a busy day. I’ve traded my ice cream for a cheese stick. I’m not saying I will never have ice cream again, but I had made it a habit that if I was watching television, I needed ice cream.
Also, I have always had my prayer time and devotions in the morning and I still do, but I try to add a meditation in as well to allow myself to be present with God in the moment. It is about creating a God-awareness to my day rather than just allowing my routine to take over.
Changes Your Perspective
Let’s face it, when we don’t feel well overall, we become negative Nellies! It is difficult to be positive when we are tired, sore and have a bad attitude about ourselves. Many times, our bad attitude is a result of what we are allowing to infiltrate our mind, soul and body. A bad habit can have a domino effect on us. The fact is, when we feel good our outlook on life changes, not just because of what is going on inside our bodies, but how we view everything else. Often, we have more solutions to problems rather than being a part of the problem. We look at our glass as half-full rather than half-empty!
Heals Your Body, Mind and Soul
I’ve come a long way in fifteen days. When I first started, I had joint pain all over my body. This was one of my deciding factors in doing the sugar fast. I remembered when I did the Keto diet earlier this year, which also eliminates sugar from your diet, how much better my body felt.
Research shows indulging in too much sugar causes inflammation in muscles and joints. As a heart attack survivor, controlling the amount of sugar I eat is important because inflammation is a known contributor to heart disease, diabetes and cancer.
A true statement is the healthier you eat, the healthier you become. Trust me, I am far from perfect in my eating habits or I wouldn’t have a weight issue, However, the more I educate myself about the importance of eating properly and how the body works the more committed I am to share what I am learning and applying this knowledge to my own life.
When Poison Becomes Pleasure
We know what detox does for the body, but it is equally important for the mind and soul. Our minds do not think as clearly, process information or react as quickly when we are doing things to our body that impact our thought process.
It was important for me to change my mindset because I felt like an addict looking for the next score, even if it was only “harmless” sugar in my case. Anything that starts to matter to you more than God, becomes a god to you. It becomes an all-important all-consuming thought, and there is no space for anything else. God keeps getting pushed in the background farther and farther until He is non-existent. Some might say I am being dramatic, but I’m not.
What does an addict do when he or she is trying to get clean? Detox!
Remove the Dross
There is a process that is used on silver to remove the impurities and make it worth more. It is called removing the dross. The silver is melted, all the impurities come to the surface and they are skimmed off the top leaving the pure metal behind.
This is what my sugar fast is doing for me. It is going deep, looking for the impurities within my heart, mind and soul as I remove the impurities from my body. Has it been fun? No! But, the value of sacrifice and obedience has been immeasurable.
God is doing new things in my heart. It started with a sugar fast, but it has turned into so much more for me. There were some things in my life I needed to detox from besides sugar, and although it is never fun to see your own shortcomings, God has been loving and patient with me in this process.
Don’t Be Afraid
I don't know what God is calling you to detox from in your life, but I do know the value of doing a fast from something that has you entangled in SELF. Share on XI don’t know what God is calling you to detox from in your life, but I do know the value of doing a fast from something that has you entangled deeply in SELF. I pray if you are struggling that you will find the motivation to take that first step to freedom. The good news is you never have to walk alone. God is always with you and He will provide for you in ways you can’t imagine. Surround yourself with those who will encourage you and give you some accountability. Don’t worry about if you mess up because as the saying goes, “It is only failure if you don’t try!”
Next week I will share with you the ups and downs of my sugar fast and tell you how I did. In the meantime, I want to leave you with a verse that God has spoken to me repeatedly. It is a verse I’m sure you have heard many times, but God’s message never gets old!
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
