I was very excited to share my good news when I was expecting my first baby. Everyone had well wishes and tons of advice. A phrase repeated to me many times during my pregnancy, was, “A baby changes everything in your world.” I knew a baby would change my world, but not to the extent of how much my baby girl would change me. It is true, parenthood can make or break you in those first few months.
A Baby Does Change Everything
My life changed dramatically when my daughter was born. All the sudden I was responsible for this tiny, human-being who depended on me for everything. It was my job to feed, clothe, protect and care for her in ways I couldn’t begin to comprehend. You learn to sleep standing up and eat holding a ten-pound bowling ball, otherwise known as your baby, in your hand.
The Love
The love I felt for her on the day she was born was immense, but it just keeps growing in leaps and bounds. I can honestly say, I love her more every day. Yet, I think to myself “How can this be humanly possible? How could this tiny child change my life so much? Anyone who is a parent understands when you have a child, a different kind of love emerges from deep within us. A love that is all self-sacrificing.
Another Baby Changes the World
Another baby changed the world when He was born in a manger over two thousand years ago. This baby is still changing lives today. There were only a few people who understood how the birth of this child would change everything. They knew the Messiah was coming, but they didn’t know when it would happen. However, they had been anticipating His birth for a long time. The book of Isaiah is the proof and evidence.
Isaiah 9:6
For a child is born to us, a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
New Parents
From the time he was conceived, Mary and Joseph knew their baby was extraordinary. It isn’t every day an Angel of the Lord reveals to you are going to conceive a child for God and your future husband Joseph will be His father. It is hard being first-time parents, let alone knowing you are going to be the parents of the Messiah. On top of everything else, they had to travel to Bethlehem and Mary ended up having her baby in a barn.
Because of the innocence of a sweet baby named Jesus, we have someone who we can depend upon for everything. It was our father God fulfilling His promise to the world. The Messiah had come as a newborn baby! This baby changes everything for the world.
Who would have thought?
Who would think such a small and innocent baby would take on the pain and suffering of every human being? Isn’t it hard to believe an innocent, sweet baby boy would be loved, hated, and despised by so many? Who would have imagined this infant would bring eternal hope, joy, and peace for all nations? Yet, this infant born to a young mother and a father would bring salvation to the world.
A baby does change everything, but baby Jesus truly changed the world.
As you reflect on the birth of the Messiah, my prayer for you is to know the wonder and awe of God's vast love for you. The Christmas Story
Luke 2:1-11 (NLT)
At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.
He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger because there was no lodging available for them.
That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior-yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
The Perfect Gift
This Christmas season take the time to worship the King who was born an innocent baby in Bethlehem. Look beyond the tinsel, lights, the pretty wrapping paper, and the gifts. Make your focus on the gift that will last for an eternity. Jesus came into the world as the perfect gift to unwrap. Jesus desires to fill us with His presence every day, not just Christmas.
Merry Christmas and may the love of Jesus bless you and your family. May Jesus sparkle in your life for all the world to see.

I love this. I was reading the story in Luke today. And one of the things that stood out to me was when He said, she kept these things in her heart. Luke 2:19. I think he said it twice and as a mom it really hurt my heart.
Sheila Rhodes says
Hi, Zaibel
What I do love about the story is that God chose to have His son in a manger to prove that Jesus was for everyone regardless of status. God also showed that women were of equal value in His eyes and have a place in ministry. Talk about a gift! I’m thankful for Mary’s faith and obedience.

I love, love, love the Christmas story! Thank you so much for reprinting it here. You are so right about how a birth changes the parents. It is truly amazing, and I think one of the biggest blessings we receive from our Heavenly Father. To be Mary, the mother of our Saviour, I don’t even know how I would handle that!!

Kathleen Bailey says
I often think about what Mary’s pregnancy and Jesus’s early life must have been like. When nothing special happened when he was a boy (at first) did they doubt that he was special or did they have faith in God? Were they just holding their breathe, waiting for something to happen? A baby certainly does change everything.
Amanda Martin says
Such a sweet story about your baby girl! And thank you for the reminder of the reason for the season.

Marta Rivera says
I think about how the Bible says, “Mary pondered all these things in her heart.” As a mother I fear for my children having to go through pain and suffering, yet I know I can’t protect them from it. Can you imagine her heartbreak?
Sheila Rhodes says
Hi, Marta!
I can’t imagine her heartbreak. I’m sure when he was born her heart was so full of joy, but watching her beloved son be crucified had to be absolutely grueling. I’m very thankful for her obedience and bravery. Have a Merry Christmas!
